Human Nature is excited to announce that we’re one of eight community organisations chosen to receive a grant from the Social Futures Resilient Kids Youth Participation Fund for our Empowered Future Camps!
Supporting youth recovery
This grant is part of the Resilient Kids program, funded by Healthy North Coast through a $10 million Australian Government initiative to support disaster recovery efforts for Northern Rivers youth aged 8-18 impacted by the floods.
Facing a competitive selection process, forty applications were submitted across the region, showcasing a diverse range of impactful activities. The funded projects prioritise the needs of:
- Children and young people with disabilities, focusing on neurodivergent and those with intellectual or cognitive disabilities.
- Young people disengaged from school or education.
- Non-binary and transgender youth.
The evaluation panel included young people themselves, representatives from Healthy North Coast, Social Futures, and local youth services, along with community members directly affected by the floods.
Empowered Future Camps: reconnecting with nature and building resilience
Human Nature’s Empowered Future Camps are specifically designed for young people disengaged from education and impacted by the floods. These immersive two-night, three-day camping experiences will empower participants to make informed decisions about their well-being, support their peers, and boost their confidence in both preparing for and recovering from natural disasters.
We’ll be working closely with camp participants to co-design the experiences, ensuring they’re fun, engaging, and reconnect them with nature while building essential social, emotional, and life skills.
Exciting camp ideas
Early brainstorming sessions have yielded exciting possibilities, including camping with pack horses, a canoeing adventure and a snorkelling and marine awareness camp. We can’t wait to see the final camp designs come to life through the collaboration between our incredible staff and the young people themselves!
