Human Nature and your privacy

Human Nature is committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring that your personal information remains secure and confidential. We follow the Australian Privacy Principles as set out in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and other relevant laws.

Confidentiality of your information

When you engage with Human Nature, any information you share with us is treated with the utmost confidentiality. We will not disclose your personal details to anyone outside the Human Nature team without your consent, except in the following situations:

  • if we are concerned about your safety or the safety of someone else. In such cases, we will try to speak with you first about what needs to happen and what support may be available
  • if we are required by law to disclose information, such as in cases of child protection, reporting serious criminal activity, or responding to a court order
  • if we need to share limited de-identified data to help us evaluate and improve our services

Where possible, we will always let you know before taking these steps.

Your email address will not be added to any mailing lists without your permission.

Human Nature uses de-identified or aggregated information to help us to evaluate and develop our services and learn about the health needs of young people.

How and why we collect personal information

We collect personal information to provide the best possible support. This may include:

  • information you provide when signing up for our programs, newsletters, or events (e.g. name, email, phone number)
  • information required for intake assessments, risk assessments and service delivery.
  • mental health assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes (if applicable).
  • website data, including cookies and analytics, to help us understand how people use our website and improve user experience

When you visit our website, we may collect information using cookies and tracking technologies. This helps us:

  • understand how visitors use our site
  • improve website functionality and user experience
  • deliver relevant content and communications

We take your privacy seriously and take all reasonable steps to protect personal information from loss, misuse, or unauthorised access. This includes:

Requesting access to your information

If you would like to access a copy of your record, you can apply in writing to Human Nature at office@humannature.org.au

If you have any concerns about how we handle your personal information and are not satisfied with our response, you can also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) for further support.

Your right to give feedback or make a complaint

We want you to feel safe, respected, and heard. If something doesn’t feel right—or if you just want to give us some feedback—you can speak up.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • You can make a complaint or report something anonymously.
  • We’ll respect your privacy, in line with our Privacy and Confidentiality Policy.
  • You’ll get a response within 5 business days for complaints, and within 3 business days for incidents.

We take every report seriously, involve you in the review process (when it’s appropriate), and work hard to find a solution that works for everyone.

We see feedback as a chance to improve, so don’t hold back if there’s something you want us to know.
